Needs Analysis

Combining subjects in education has become an interesting and promising way to increase students learning and support their motivation. In particular, research on combining music and mathematics is promising but scarce. Furthermore, how to better develop educational technology and tailor it to support teachers and students in such multidisciplinary experiences is an open question. This workshop should be run as it will invite the TEL community to engage in fruitful discussions about what technological features are needed to support combined subjects in K-12 education following a design-based research approach. In particular, music and mathematics. The workshop is highly dynamic, fun, and collaborative. PhD’s students working/interested in projects using Design Based Research + working with K-12 education will find this workshop insightful. Finally, the participants will discuss and share their feedback on a beta version of an ongoing project.

 

Learning Objectives

The participants will learn about design-based research applied to music and mathematics. In particular, Edtech aiming to support the teaching and learning of fractions. Participants will get to know about the PMM project, learn about the relationship between music and mathematics, help the PMM project by giving feedback to it (focus groups formats), share their perspectives on the role that technology plays when facilitating multidisciplinary experiences, and brainstorm on what metrics and data could reflect learning in a combined (music and mathematics) experience like PMM.

 

Pre-activities

No prior materials will be sent to the participants. We will share a Spotify playlist and will ask them to get familiar with the songs we will play at some point during the workshop. No prerequisites are needed to participate in the workshop.

 

Session Description

PMM is a digital educational game where students learn to use mathematics to write, read, and make music (without musical notation). The game narrative is about acquiring mathematical skills to keep composing and performing music in mathematical notation.

Through a learning engineering approach, we aim to generate data-driven empirical evidence to advocate for a Mathematical Musician learning paradigm where students’ mathematical, musical, and social-emotional development outcomes benefit significantly when jointly experienced.

During the workshop, the participants will discuss design-based research, experience a PMM lesson, give feedback to the technology and the instructional design, compose music collaboratively in mathematical notation, give their feedback from a TEL perspective, and brainstorm on how the users’ data could better explain the learning engineering goal PMM seeks to achieve.
