Abstract

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the difference between educational games and gamification, what makes a good educational game, and how AI can enhance educational games. The workshop also covers the game design process, including educational content preparation, identifying key learnings, brainstorming game ideas, prototyping and playtesting, and using AI to enhance the learning experience.
In addition, the workshop explores creating engaging games by discussing game mechanics, player motivation, and incorporating storytelling into SEGs. Participants will also learn about best practices in educational game design through examples of successful SEGs that use AI. The group work session will allow participants to brainstorm game ideas and present them as paper prototypes. This is a great way to encourage creativity and collaboration among participants. The outcomes of this workshop are the framework for designing AI-enhanced SEGs as well as the valuable feedback from the participants in order to iterate on the framework.

Needs Analysis

This interactive workshop aims to introduce the topic of serious educational games (SEGs) to PhD candidates in the TEL community. The objective of this workshop is to design an SEG for a classroom setting in an engaging way. The process will involved a novel design framework presented by the researchers that guides the participants step-by-step through the design process of SEGs. We aim to answer these research questions:

  1. What are the common frameworks that can be used for designing SEGss?
  2. How can SEGs be designed that fit into the context of different TEL domains?

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the difference of gamification and serious games for educational purposes.
  • Learn about different frameworks for designing engaging and fun SEGs.
  • Evaluation and classification of SEG elements.
  • Integration of artificial intelligence (AI) enhanced SEGs and personalized learning.
  • Incorporate SEGs in the syllabus.

Pre-activities

The participants don’t have to prepare anything it advance. The workshop is prepared for beginners and experienced participants in the field of educational games as well as participants interested in the topics of educational games, serious games, and gamification.
