Abstract

This workshop will start by providing a brief introduction to the field of Transfer of Training that inquires how knowledge, skills, and abilities learned in one context can be effectively transferred and applied in a different context. We will explore existing techniques and tools that support students to reflect on the knowledge that they have gained in the course and how they can apply it in other contexts (e.g., their workplace), as well as good practices for higher education teachers (e.g., how they can improve the design of the course to better support the transfer of learning based on the feedback gathered from students). Finally, we will co-design low-fidelity prototypes of socio-technical solutions, or tools that can support the reflection on the transfer of learning, adapted to the specific context of the participants.

Needs Analysis

Are you required to teach as part of your PhD program? Does your course involve teaching skills that students will have to apply in their future workplaces or other contexts? If so, this workshop is tailored to meet your needs! Join us in this hands-on workshop that will provide a gentle introduction to the field of “Transfer of Learning/Training”, concerned with understanding how knowledge, skills, and abilities learned in one context can be effectively transferred and applied in a different ones. We will explore practical techniques and tools that can be implemented in your course to help students reflect on what they have learned and how to apply this knowledge to new contexts, as well as how teachers can modify their course design to facilitate the transfer of learning. Moreover, we will co-design prototypes of tools that can support the transfer of learning, tailored for your course context.

Learning Objectives

Participants will have the possibility to:

  1. Gain general knowledge about the research on the Transfer of Learning/Training.
  2. Acquire practical experience on techniques that can be implemented in their own courses to help students reflect on what they have learned and apply this knowledge to new contexts.
  3. Obtain knowledge about good practices on how teachers can modify their course design to facilitate the transfer of learning.
  4. Participate in a co-design session aiming to design low-fidelity prototypes for potential socio-technical solutions that can support the transfer of learning in their own teaching context.

Pre-activities

None.

Session Description

This workshop will have three parts:

  1. A brief introduction to the field of “Transfer of Learning/Training”, related models and frameworks (20 minutes).
  2. A showcase of practical techniques that can be implemented in your course to help students reflect on what they have learned and apply this knowledge to new contexts, as well as help you to modify your course design to facilitate the transfer of learning (30 minutes).
  3. A co-design session where we will produce low-fidelity prototypes of socio-technical solutions to support the transfer of learning in the classroom. For instance, we are currently developing a AI-powered chatbot that supports students’ reflection on the transfer of learning (40 minutes).
