Using Mind Maps in Moodle to unleash the power of learning analytics and personalised feedback

Needs Analysis
One major obstacle to providing personalised feedback with learning analytics (LA) is the granularity of the data we collect about the students that we have available to use as input for any data processing. In this workshop, we will introduce mind-maps as a new interactive data-enriched learning activity available as a self-developed plugin for Moodle. The plugin enables the collection of fine-grained data on how students interact with the learning activity, leading to a detailed analysis of students’ learning behaviour during the creation of mind maps and the generation of feedback tailored to the specific needs and performance of each student. The combination of interactive mind map tasks and data-driven feedback creates a dynamic and personalised learning environment that is often missing in traditional teaching methods. Mind-maps promote a deeper understanding and higher retention of what has been learned.
Learning Objectives
The workshop aims to provide participants with an understanding of how to effectively use the Mind Map (MM) plug-in to enhance the learning process. Participants will learn how to create and configure interactive MM tasks to promote structured learning. They will also learn how to use learning analytics to analyse learning behaviour and identify weaknesses in student understanding when using mind maps. Participants will also learn how to generate personalised feedback based on the collected data to enhance students’ self-reflection and self-learning skills with mind maps. In addition, the workshop will emphasise the importance of Data-enriched Learning Activities (DeLA) and how they can dynamically adapt the learning process to the individual needs of students.
Pre-activities
Knowledge of course management systems such as Moodle is required to attend the workshop. Participants should have an understanding of the basic principles of teaching and learning in higher education. Experience of using digital learning tools and an interest in integrating technology into the teaching process is an advantage. Knowledge of learning analytics and an interest in data-driven pedagogy will be helpful to realise the full potential. Openness to innovative teaching methods and a willingness to challenge traditional teaching approaches are essential. Participants should be motivated to explore new ways of enhancing the learning process through the use of interactive and data-rich learning activities.
Session Description
This workshop is dedicated to the Moodle learning activity Mind-Map (MM), an innovative tool that offers an underrepresented learning activity in current teaching approaches and facilitates the integration of LA and personalised feedback into the learning process. Participants will not only learn about the importance and impact of personalised feedback on students’ learning success, but also how to effectively integrate and configure MM into teaching. The workshop emphasises the relevance of LA to gain deep insights into students’ learning behaviour and to create personalised feedback that goes beyond general hints and offers specific, actionable suggestions for improvement. Participants will learn how to use Data-enriched Learning Activities (DeLA) to dynamically adapt lessons to students’ individual progress. Finally, an evaluation of the MM tool will take place to assess its effectiveness and impact on the learning process.
