Needs Analysis

This workshop will introduce “From Awareness to Actions: Designing a Model-Based LA Dashboard for Teaching Problem Solving Skills in Physics,” a prototype in educational technology. At the heart of our workshop is the prototype dashboard, distinguished by its robust theoretical underpinnings. Unlike many tools that are primarily data-driven, our LA dashboard is rooted in a well-established educational theory. This theoretical foundation ensures that our tool not only tracks learning progress but does so in a way that is pedagogically sound and aligned with the cognitive processes involved in learning physics. Our workshop makes an effort for TEL PhD students, PostDocs, superviors etc. to witness the translation of theoretical models into practical, tech-based educational tools. This alignment with theoretical principles ensures a deeper and more effective approach to teaching problem-solving skills, a crucial competency in physics education.

Learning Objectives

Participants will get hands-on experience with the LA dashboard, gaining insights into how theory shapes the tool’s design and functionality. This experience is invaluable for those looking to develop or evaluate tech-based educational tools in their careers. The workshop will also serve as a platform for discussing future research directions. We encourage participants to consider how theoretical models can further revolutionize learning analytics and educational technology.

Pre-activities

We will make our LAK workshop paper available before the workshop and will invite the participants to get acquainted with it.

Session Description

We want the participants to engage with peers and experts who share a passion for integrating theory into technology-enhanced learning. This workshop is not just about learning a new tool; it’s about being part of a community that values theoretically grounded innovations in education. We will introduce our journey of DBR thus far and explain the principles and theoretical framework behind the model-based LA tool. The participants will be provided with a teacher dashboard and will be asked to be in the role of a teacher when going through a vignette study protocol. Afterards the participants will be guided through group discussions looking into the future of model-based learning analytics.
