AI: Skills and competences for teachers and trainers

Thursday 16/05 10:30-12:00h
Workshop Space A
Needs Analysis

This workshop will provide PhD candidates in TEL with essential knowledge and skills to navigate the emerging terrain of AI in education. Based on research from the Erasmus+ AI and Vocational Education and Training project and the large scale AI Pioneer project, the workshop will examine the skills and competences needed for teachers and trainers in using AI for teaching and learning. The workshop will also examine how Continuing Professional Development might best be organized in different European Member States.

The use of AI in education is not new, But the rapid development and spread of Generative AI, following the release of Chat GPT in November 2023 have provoked serious debates over both the short term and longer term future of education. The recently established Open AI GPTS store has a considerable number of education apps, and with the lack of convincing use cases for Generative AI in wider society it could be concluded that education may be a leading candidate.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • Consider the impact of Generative AI on education
  • Discuss the skills and competences required for using Generative AI for teaching and learning
  • Develop guidelines for future projects on using AI for learning in different sectors of education
  • Reflect on their own skills and competences in the field of AI and education
  • Define what is an AI pioneer

Outcomes:

  • An understanding of the skills, competences and knowledge required by teachers and trainers for the use of AI for teaching and learning
Feedback on the proposed Extension to the DigCompEdu Framework on the use of AI for teaching and learning.
  • An outline of a Handbook for developing projects on AU in Education (participants will be invited to finalize the handbook in a collaborative coediting environment to be published by the AI pioneers project).

Pre-activities

We would like participants to try to find projects in their country on using AI for teaching and learning and be prepared to make a short description / presentation of those projects.

Session Description

AI in education is a complex and emergent process requiring a transdisciplinary approach. At the same time it is likely to impart on both teachers and trainers and institutions throughout the world. This workshop is designed for us to jointly explore our own knowledge and practices in the field and to develop new ideas and approaches.

Following an introduction there will be a Learning Cafe session looking at the skills, competences and knowledge required for teachers and trainers for AI; at the potential and issues with Generative AI for Education and the projects needed to take forward the development and use of AI in education.
