Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Framework: Different perspectives

🔎 Needs Analysis
TPACK is one of the fundamental frameworks in TEL. But, TEL researchers often struggle with a superficial theoretical understanding due to a lack of clarity on its practical indicators, differentiating theoretical perspectives, contextual influences, recent updates, and its strengths and limitations. This gap can lead to misconceptions and inadequate applications of TPACK in TEL. This workshop addresses this need by fostering a deeper, evidence-based comprehension of TPACK through both theory and practice. The session will begin with assessing participants’ existing understanding of TPACK, then, expand on this individual foundation through individual and group activities to engage with the framework critically and explore its applicability in research and practice. The workshop provides an experience to better cognitive representation of TPACK and its role in TEL bridging the individual level understanding to related literature.
📒 Session Description
The session will begin with participants sharing their understanding of the TPACK framework through practical examples. The TPACK framework will be introduced, starting with its foundational concept of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK), and the key sub-dimensions of TPACK. It will also include practical indicators of TPACK in education. Different theoretical perspectives on TPACK (transformative vs. integrative approaches) will be presented. Participants will then classify their activity examples by these different perspectives. Participants will engage in a group activity to identify and list environmental and individual factors that influence TPACK in their specific educational contexts. Recent updates in TPACK research will be discussed, with a particular focus on the role of context.
The session will conclude with a brainstorming discussion, where participants will critically analyze the strengths and weaknesses of TPACK.
