🔎 Needs Analysis

TEL and EdTech aim to improve learning, yet the field rarely reflects on how knowledge should be built. As Schneider et al. (2025) note, researchers often rely on inherited research practices without examining the assumptions behind them or whether they fit the constraints of learning with technology. This is not just a methodological issue but an epistemological one: we frequently use tools and frameworks without asking what they allow us to see — or obscure.

This workshop addresses that gap. It invites PhD candidates to explore how knowledge is constructed in TEL, surface hidden assumptions, and critically examine why many common research habits feel misaligned with real educational contexts. Rather than offering fixed answers, the workshop invites participants for an experiential space for reflection, and epistemic awareness and responsibilities — essential foundations for designing meaningful and coherent research in TEL.


📒 Session Description

The workshop will be a mixture of informative presentations, reflective tasks, collaborative brainstorming, and group discussion. It will start with a presentation by the authors, pointing out the problems in the field that led to this workshop. It will continue with an explanation of the evolution of science, paradigms, and methods. In other words, the Philosophy of science and the theology that we follow. Open discussion/debate about paradigms and frameworks based on the constraints in TEL. Group work, discus and design of contributions. Presentation of group works. Conclusions

  • Brief evolution of the scientific method
  • Paradigms
  • Critically examine research designs
  • Critically reflect on what could be the contributions to the field (nature of the contribution, value of the contribution, format of the contribution, etc.)
