IDEATION: From Educational Challenges to Serious Game Concepts

📅 Tuesday 19/05 10:30-12:00h
📍 Workshop Space B

🔎 Needs Analysis

Many educators, researchers, and instructional designers are interested in using serious games to support learning, engagement, and skill development, yet often struggle to translate educational goals into effective game concepts. Common challenges include identifying suitable learning objectives, designing meaningful gameplay mechanics, balancing engagement with pedagogy, and creating experiences that are both feasible and impactful. These challenges are especially relevant in educational contexts where motivation, participation, and experiential learning play a central role.

This interactive workshop introduces participants to a practical ideation process for designing serious games. Through guided activities, participants will explore how educational challenges can be transformed into game-based learning experiences. The workshop combines creative thinking methods, collaborative exercises, and structured design tools to help participants generate, evaluate, and refine serious game concepts.

📒 Session Description

The workshop is designed as a hands-on, practice-oriented session that encourages experimentation, discussion, and creative problem-solving. Participants will work individually and develop initial serious game concepts that can later serve as the foundation for educational, training, or research-based projects.

💡 Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify educational challenges suitable for serious game design
  • Define clear learning goals and target skills
  • Generate gameplay ideas and mechanics aligned with educational objectives
  • Evaluate game concepts based on engagement, feasibility, and ethical considerations
  • Use a structured ideation canvas to organize and develop serious game concepts
  • Translate abstract educational needs into interactive learning experiences
