Hyperchalk – How to implement self-hosted whiteboard tasks

Friday 09/06 14:00-15:30h
Workshop Space A
Abstract

This workshop aims to explore the potential of using Hyperchalk, a self-hosted collaborative whiteboard software, for implementing interventions in educational settings. Participants will be divided into groups to design and solve collaborative learning tasks using Hyperchalk on pre-selected topics. The software’s unique feature of providing deep access to learners’ process data will be utilized in analyzing the outcomes of the tasks. Additionally, the workshop will provide a tutorial on setting up Hyperchalk with popular learning management systems such as Moodle and Canvas. The workshop will provide insights on the practical implementation of using Hyperchalk for educational interventions.

Needs Analysis

Hyperchalk is a collaborative whiteboard software. As self-hosted software that focuses on enabling Learning Analytics research, Hyperchalk provides deep access to learners’ process data. This distinguishes it from commercial whiteboard solutions like Flinga or Miro, which do not provide these insights. Hyperchalk was officially published as a demo at EC-TEL 2022, where it won the best demo award. It offers features which specifically cater towards educational use cases: support for LTI 1.3 Advantage for seamless integration with many learning management systems, the collection of rich process data, and a replay mode which allows studying learner behavior on a qualitative level. In the workshop, we want to introduce the tool to the participants, explore different use cases and teach the participants how to set up and integrate the tool with their learning environments.

Learning Objectives

The participants will brainstorm about learning tasks they can implement with the help of Hyperchalk. The participants will furthermore learn how to set up, and how to administrate the tool. Furthermore, they will learn how to set it up with their LMS via the LTI 1.3 Advantage standard. After the workshop, participants are able to set up and use Hyperchalk for their own teaching and research efforts.

Pre-activities

Participants should bring laptops or tablets.

Session Description

In this workshop, we will explore the possibilities of Hyperchalk for implementing interventions. First, we will give a 10 minute introduction on the tool Hyperchalk. We will then divide all participants into groups. These groups are tasked to design collaborative learning tasks that use Hyperchalk on several pre-selected topics. The participants will then try to solve the collaborative tasks created by the other groups. Finally, we will end the workshop with a tutorial on how to set up Hyperchalk with the popular learning management systems Moodle and Canvas (the process is very similar for other LMS’ such as Blackboard or D2L) and watch Hyperchalk replays of the participants solving the tasks.
