Needs Analysis
Engagement in Language Learning: The integration of board games in the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) classroom is driven by a need to enhance language learning engagement among language learners of all ages. The analysis reveals a desire to move beyond traditional methods and explore innovative approaches that captivate learners’ interest.
Multi-Genre Board Games Integration: The need to explore various genres of board games (simulation, worker placement, deckbuilding, dice games, etc.) suggests a recognition of the diverse preferences and learning styles of students. The intention is to cater to a range of interests and create a versatile learning environment.
Technology Integration: The incorporation of technological tools such as apps, digital storytellers, and AI co-players signifies a recognition of the role of technology in modern education. There is a need to leverage technology to enhance the learning experience and align it with contemporary educational trend
Learning Objectives
The participants will learn:
- to develop expertise in employing board games and storytelling techniques to effectively facilitate the improvement of speaking skills among their students
- how to seamlessly integrate language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) along with vocabulary and grammar into their teaching practices. The emphasis is on practical strategies for incorporating language learning within various instructional contexts.
- to acquire the skill to adapt language teaching strategies to diverse gaming genres, such as escape-room, story-driven, eurogames, thematic games.
- to use technology tools, including apps, digital storytellers, and AI co-players, to enhance language instruction.
- to develop strategies to enhance student motivation and engagement through the incorporation of board games, collaborative activities, and discussions.

Pre-activities
The participants should read the rulebook of the board game Unlock! and play the mini tutorial (to be ready for the hands-on activity).
Session Description
- Introduction to board games and education (some important theoretical concepts and previous related research) – 10 min
- Game-based learning and teaching: from video games to (physical and digital) board games – 5 min
- Modern board games: categories, language (in)dependence and cooperation mode – 10 min
- Enhancing the board game teaching experience: apps and tools; previewing different techonologies – 5 min
- Choosing the proper board game: modifying the selection criteria based on the technology factor – 5 min
- Teaching scenarios and forming the groups – 10 min
- Hands-on activity: Unlock! the classroom – 35 min
- Final Discussion & Wrap up the session – 10 min
