Qualitative Methods and Privacy-Compliant AI-Assisted Horizontal Analysis for Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA)
Friday 16/05 11:00-12:30h
Workshop Space B
Session Description
This 90-minute interactive workshop will equip early and mid-stage PhD candidates with the skills and knowledge to analyse qualitative datasets such as interviews, focus groups or surveys. The workshop will cover common types of data collection and analytical approaches, depending on research aims and questions.
Attendees will understand how to apply inductive coding by identifying units of analysis, themes, and patterns, and types of memos to write during the analytical process. We will also explore how to apply reflexivity during the QDA process.
We will discuss the various generative AI capabilities for QDA analytic activities, and the need to critically reflect on human interpretation. We will demonstrate an AI-enabled text analysis tool and participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of horizontal analysis and work with sample datasets or their data to practice coding and summarisation.
The session will combine a combination of theory and practical, guided activities with collaborative discussions. By the end of the session, participants will have a production of initial coding results, thematic summaries and be aware of data protection and other ethical considerations such as bias when using AI in the analysis process.
