Abstract

The scope of this workshop is to explore career opportunities for researchers and PhD students outside academia, and in the direction of entrepreneurship. We will learn how to commercialise research, and how to start and manage a business based on it afterwards. Through discussions and debate we will touch also upon common mistakes in the researcher’s entrepreneurial journey.


Needs Analysis

Academic jobs and secure careers for recently graduated PhD students are becoming increasingly difficult to access. Considering these challenges, the workshop intends to offer alternative career paths in the direction of entrepreneurship. This could help PhD students to think about their research in more practical terms outside academia and projects, applying it to real life through business opportunities.


Learning Objectives
  • Learn how to know an research result is a good business opportunity.
  • Understand the business model canvas as a framework to organise a business.
  • Reflect on external factors and stakeholders to translate research to practice.;


Pre-activities

Familiarise yourself with the Business Model Canvas:



Session Description

Participants will work in groups to translate their own or given research outputs to business opportunities. Instructions will be given during the workshop.
