Short description:
Learning analytics has become a mainstream topic in educational technology, particularly with the development of AI-based systems that require learner data. Many European researchers in technology-enhanced learning are working on topics related to the use of data from technologies designed to support or augment learning environments. The workshop will be structured to help ECTEL members interested in learning analytics and working in the European context at different seniority levels contribute to the broad conversation of what matters in learning analytics for Europe (research topics, policy, joint initiatives). These conversations will shape the agenda and activities for Learning Analytics within ECTEL.

Short description:
In this half-day, interactive workshop participants will gain hands-on experience utilizing emerging technologies and Generative AI to design immersive Digital Educational Escape Rooms (DEER) that are engaging, accessible, and inclusive. In particular, we will explore the processes and design strategies used by the organizers to develop and implement DEER activities in an undergraduate-level online asynchronous English literature course, focusing especially on how DEERs can be used as a foundational activity that is integrated into additional scaffolded assignments to support both academic integrity and the development of higher-order thinking skills.

The XAI4TEL workshop explores the integration of Explainable AI (XAI) in Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) and EdTech, focusing on enhancing interpretability and trust in AI-driven educational tools, and supporting learners in making informed decisions on learning recommendations. Participants of the workshop will gain a comprehensive understanding of XAI principles, hands-on experience with sample educational XAI tools, and best practices for continuous integration. Workshop’s interactive sessions will also address the ethical implications and collaboratively develop strategies to design and evaluate XAI-driven learning systems that prioritize learner autonomy and agency, with the aim to empower learners’ decisions on personalized learning recommendations.

Short description:
Generative AI (genAI) has the potential to transform education by providing personalized learning experiences, increasing student engagement and motivation, and widening access to education. However, successful integration of these tools requires specific competencies from teachers. In this workshop, we’ll develop a competency model to identify essential skills and abilities for lecturers to use genAI in higher education. This involves synchronizing the understanding of terms, structuring them into categories, and translating them into teaching practices. At the end of the workshop, we aim to have a competency model with defined categories and concrete abilities, skills and knowledge along with practical examples.

This workshop examines the significance of developing technology-enhanced learning (TEL) products that facilitate students’ sense of belonging within formal educational contexts. While traditional TEL research prioritises learning gains, this workshop emphasises the impact of technology on motivation, engagement, well-being, and social connections. The workshop will facilitate an in-depth exploration of theoretical models and concepts that elucidate the dynamics of belonging in education. Short description:
Studies have shown that motivational elements in micro-credentials and open badges need purposeful learning design. This half day workshop includes short presentations based on selected experience reports, discussions in small groups and sharing good practices that take turns in the face-to-face workshop. Participants of the workshop will be invited to share their experiences on how micro-credentials and open badges have been implemented in higher education institutions. The workshop will identify common challenges and ways to overcome them, discussing potential of technology-enhanced learning. We invite short experience reports to be submitted by 24 June via the link at the workshop website.

In the evolving landscape of AI, the integration of ethical considerations has become crucial, particularly in technology-enhanced learning. Moreover, recent regulations categorize the use of AI in educational settings as high-risk. This classification mandates compliance measures, including thorough testing for fairness, accuracy, and data security before deployment in educational settings. The designation of these applications as high-risk highlights the critical need for oversight and ethical consideration in the integration of AI technologies within the educational sector. However, translating these regulations into practice remains a significant challenge. We aim to address this gap between regulation and practice in our workshop.
