About Toulouse, a university town in the heart of southern France

Fourth largest city in France, knowledgeable and vibrant, Toulouse cultivates its creativity and dynamism. Nested in a privileged geographical location, close to the Mediterranean Sea yet not far from the Atlantic Ocean, visitors fall prey to the colorful charms of the well-known “pink city” and its Latin personality. But Toulouse is not only one of the essential stop-off in the heart of the south west of France, but also one of the most student villages in the region. With more than 1,3M inhabitants, Toulouse is expanding demographically, ranking first among the southern European cities, with a yearly increase of 10,000 inhabitants for the past 10 years. As the third French student city in numbers (120,000 higher education students) and recently rated “the best city to study in” by the French magazine l’Etudiant, Toulouse has crafted a vibrant ecosystem and fertile ground for like-minds, which naturally lead to being labelled European City of Science in 2018.

Toulouse is the leading French metropolis for economic growth, job creation and R&D investment. Innovation and research are the DNA of the city and the territory is well known worldwide for its aeronautics and space industry, its universities and its research laboratories that are boosting innovation in fields such as health, economics, biotechnology, nanotechnology and robotics.
Toulouse is an exceptional destination for great international conferences. Leaping from 130th to 87th position in ICCA’s international ranking of hosting cities, Toulouse has also joined its Top 50 European Cities ranking. It was therefore only natural that Toulouse was chosen in 2018 to host ESOF (EuroScience Open Forum), the largest interdisciplinary science meeting in Europe. Dedicated to scientific research and innovation it offered a unique framework for interaction and debate for scientists, innovators, educators, policy makers, business and the general public.
In this preserved city rich in 2,000 years of history, visitors will be pleased to stroll along the historic streets to discover the treasures of its architectural heritage (UNESCO classified, museums, architecture…). Strong tradition and permanent innovation make Toulouse a favorable destination in overcoming any challenges!

Cultural interests

Toulouse is also a spectacular tourist destination. Once the capital of the Visigoths and now the capital of the air and space industry, the City invites you to explore its 2000 years of history. Its churches, cathedral and basilica recount the Roman origins and religious influence of Toulouse through the ages. And the mansion houses call to mind the Golden Age of the Renaissance and the pastel trade.

We recommend you to visit the HALLE DE MACHINES, an amazing exhibition of performance Machines, each telling a tale.

Great monuments of Toulouse

After seeing the Place du Capitole, the basilica of Saint-Sernin and the Jacobins church, from the banks of the River Garonne you can admire the splendid views of the most iconic monuments of Toulouse.

Transportation

Toulouse is very well communicated, and very easy to reach from any European country.

By plane

Toulouse is Europe’s Capital of Aerospace and home to Airbus headquarters. Its Blagnac International airport is France’s 4th largest airport. As the first French Business Airport, it is only located at 15/20 minutes from the city center, 30 min by shuttle bus and 35/40 min by tramway.

  • There are flights to over 90 destinations, 67 of which are regular international flights.
  • And with 41 daily flights between Paris and Toulouse, this corridor is the 1st route taken in Europe.
  • The airport welcomed 9.7 million passengers per year in 2018.

By train

There are numerous regular scheduled trains from the region (Bordeaux, Montpellier, Lourdes and Biarritz) and Paris, as well as express trains from major cities. The train station of Toulouse-Matabiau is located in the city center and served by local transits (bus, metro).

By car/ By bus

Toulouse is the center of network of highways:
To the north, Hwy A62 from Bordeaux and Hwy A20 from Paris;
To the west, Hwy A64 from Biarritz;
To the south Hwy A66 from Barcelona;
To the west, Hwy A61 to Montpellier and Hwy A68 to Albi.

Public Transportation

Once in Toulouse, the urban transportation network includes: bus, metro and tramways. With 127 million journeys completed in 2016, the Tisséo network is the 3rd largest in France in terms of passenger numbers. Made up of 2 metro lines, 2 tramway lanes and 67 city bus routes, the network serves 115 communes around the Greater Toulouse area and 1 million inhabitants.

Additionally, a citywide bicycle rental scheme called VélôToulouse is available, with bicycles available from automated stations for a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly subscription.

About the Hosting Research Group

TALENT Research Group

The TALENT research team will be the team hosting and coordinating the event. This group is part of the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT) Laboratory  and it is composed by more than 15 permanent and non-permanent researchers working on the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). Its research is organised into three main research areas are:

  • TEL Environments for active learning, which focuses on the design and implementation of digital solutions for learners’ engagement in authentic learning contexts. The main contributions are a framework and a set of tools for supporting learning at scale: (1) Elaastic, for supporting interactive formative assessments; (2) MyMOOCSpace, a mobile app for supporting collaborative learning in MOOCs and blended learning scenarios; and (3) Lab4CE, for supporting learners in hands-on activities in the field of system and network administration.
  • Learning Analytics (LA) for personalization and adaptation, which focuses on studying how big data methods and tools can be used to exploit learning data and propose personalized and adaptive technological solutions to support professional competencies. First, a model-driven approach based on competencies and a tool for its management were proposed to unify representations of professional training and ensure their social inclusion (ANR COMPER). Second, a methodological approach based on process-mining techniques and a tool called NoteMyProgress were developed to analyze leaners’ self-regulatory strategies and support them.
  • Competency-based approach for training in engineering and professional integration, which focuses on providing competency-based solutions for supporting careers choices and occupational integration. The team has contributed on identifying a continuous improvement process for measuring learning through traces in learning management systems, and a tool called “MIAGE & Compétences” to provide a vision of the curriculum learning outcomes and the professional skills related to the business digital sector.

The TALENT have participated in more than 15 national and international projects in the area, and is currently participating in 3 more that will be still running during the conference, facilitating the dissemination of the conference: PROF-XXI (European), COMPER (National), B4MATIVE (National), LASER (National), UNIVERSEH (European).

Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse

The Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT), founded in 1990, is a Joint Research Unit (UMR) of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse (INP), the Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III (UT3), the Université Toulouse 1 Capitole (UT1) and the Université de Toulouse Jean Jaurès (UT2J).

IRIT is one of the largest UMR at the national level, and one of the pillars of research in Occitanie with its 700 members, permanent and non-permanent. Due to its multi-tutorial nature (CNRS, Toulouse Universities), its scientific impact and its interactions with other fields, the laboratory constitutes one of the structuring forces of the IT landscape and its applications in the digital world, both at regional and national level. Through its cutting-edge work and dynamics, IRIT has been able to define its identity and acquire undeniable visibility, while positioning itself at the heart of changes in local structures: University of Toulouse, as well as the various mechanisms resulting from future investments (LabEx CIMI, IRT Saint-Exupéry, SAT TTT, 3IA ANITI).
