Creating Open Educational Resources with the H5P tool

Thursday 26/05 14:00-15:30h
Outdoor Area A

This session is organized by the DETEL Erasmus+ project.
DETEL is a strategic partnership among nine European universities and EATEL to reflect their expertise in doctoral education into a new study program in TEL, extended with rich and professionally produced OERs.

Abstract

Open Educational Resources (OER) are any teaching, learning or research materials that are under open licenses or reside in the public domain, free of copyright restrictions, giving users free permission to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute them. H5P (an abbreviation for HTML5 Package) is an open source and free to use tool that enables anyone to create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content without the need for any technical skills. With H5P, the participants can create several content types such as videos enriched with interactions, presentations with interactive slides, interactive books, drag and drop tasks with images and text, images with multiple information hotspots, and quizzes with various question types. The main goals of this workshop are to present the H5P tool, introduce some key concepts about the OER and analyse, through some hands-on activities, how these key concepts can be applied and explored with the H5P tool.

Needs Analysis

As information technologies have advanced and been more accessible, a vast number of digital resources have become more available for those involved in education. Teachers have been using the Internet to spread their materials and courses, and content in digital format has largely increased. Yet, most of these materials are not open to be freely reused, shared or remixed. With the purpose of overcoming these barriers, the Open Educational Resource (OER) movement was founded to encourage and enable anyone to reuse and share content in an open manner. However, educators from higher education institutions are still resistant to embracing the use of OERs. Besides, there is a lack of technical skills to select and remix OER appropriately and a lack of awareness regarding copyright issues among academics. In this workshop, the participants will learn some concepts of Open Educational Resources and also how to use the H5P tool, an open source and free to use tool that enables anyone to create, share and reuse interactive HTML5 content without the need for any technical skills. With this, we hope to raise the participants’ awareness of the OER movement and present a source that can help them develop content in an interactive, easy and open way.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop, the participants will…

  • … get to know the H5P tool and its functionalities;
  • … be familiar with some key OER concepts, such as the 5R activities;
  • … have some ideas about how these key OER concepts can be applied and explored with the H5P tool;

Pre-activities

Pre-activities are not necessary.

Session Description

This session is organized in three main parts:

  1. Introduction and overview [20 minutes]
    Presentation of the H5P tool and its functionalities; brief introduction to key concepts of Open Educational Resources and the 5R (retain, reuse, revise, remix, redistribute); ideas of how to create Open Educational Resources with the H5P.
  2. Hands-on activity [30 minutes]
    Participants explore the H5P tool and create an Open Educational Resource about a given topic. Then, they explore how to share and reuse the content created by others.
  3. Evaluation [40 minutes]
    They present the challenges and difficulties they faced during the practical activity and evaluate an OER prototype built with H5P.
