Transport in Newcastle

The Tyne and Wear Metro is a light rail rapid transit system serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and Sunderland. Opened in stages from August 1980, it now has 60 stations across two lines, covering 77.5 km of track.

QuayLink service has two routes: Q1 from Haymarket to Quayside and Q2 from Central Station to Gateshead. Long-distance coaches use Newcastle Coach Station on St James Boulevard.

Newcastle has two bus stations: Haymarket for services heading north and east, and Eldon Square for those going south and west. Both are operated by Nexus. Many city centre roads are bus-only or have bus lanes. Stagecoach is the main operator, with buses stopping at multiple city centre locations.
