The Tale of Two Cities
For the special 20th anniversary edition, ECTEL 2025 will take place in 2 different venues in 2 different cities – Newcastle and Durham. The pre-conference days (15th and 16th September) will take place in Newcastle while the conference days (17th – 19th September) will take place in Durham. These two cities are only 10 minutes away by train, thereby allowing for easy transfers and fluidity between the two venues.
Getting there
Durham and Newcastle, located in Northeast England, are just a 12-minute train ride apart. Both cities boast excellent air, rail, road, and sea connections, ensuring convenient access from across the UK and beyond.
By Air
The nearest major airport is Newcastle International Airport, which is 20 minutes from Newcastle city centre by Metro and 40 minutes from Durham by car. The airport offers direct flights to key hubs such as London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dubai and is recognized for its sustainability initiatives.
Durham Tees Valley Airport also provides domestic connections and is less than 40 minutes from Durham.
By Rail
Both Durham and Newcastle are located on the East Coast Main Line, offering frequent and fast rail services:
- London to Newcastle: under 3 hours (LNER, Lumo)
- London to Durham: under 3 hours (LNER)
- Edinburgh to Newcastle: 1.5 hours
- Edinburgh to Durham: 1.5 hours
- York to both cities: around 1 hour
Major rail operators include LNER, Lumo, Northern, TransPennine Express, CrossCountry, and Grand Central.
By Road
Both cities are easily accessible via the A1(M), connecting them to London and Scotland, and the A69, linking to Carlisle and the Lake District. National coach services such as Megabus, National Express, and FlixBus offer convenient and budget-friendly travel options.
By Sea
The North Shields International Ferry Terminal, near Newcastle, provides direct ferry services to Amsterdam (IJmuiden) via DFDS. From the terminal, shuttle buses take around 30 minutes to Newcastle Central Station, where onward rail and bus connections are available to Durham and beyond.

Durham University
The University of Durham was founded in 1832 by Bishop Van Mildert and the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral, and is England’s third oldest university after Oxford and Cambridge. Palace Green Library is currently being transformed into a very special home for the University’s internationally renowned archive and rare book collections

Transport in Durham
Local Transport. Compact, clean and accessible, it couldn’t be easier to get around Durham.
Durham City Park and Ride: Durham City is served by three Park and Ride sites on the key routes into the city. These are situated at Belmont, Sniperley and Howlands. A direct bus service runs every 10 minutes to the city centre from each site.
The sites offer free parking for users of the Park and Ride bus service and unlimited daily travel into the city centre and back. Park and Ride users can also use the Cathedral Bus for free.
By Foot: Much of the city is accessible and with the benefit of being such a compact city, delegates can enjoy a stroll around the city accessing venues within minutes
By Bike: Bikes can be hired in the city to offer a cost-effective way to get around.

Transport in Newcastle
The Tyne and Wear Metro is a light rail rapid transit system serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and Sunderland. Opened in stages from August 1980, it now has 60 stations across two lines, covering 77.5 km of track.

QuayLink service has two routes: Q1 from Haymarket to Quayside and Q2 from Central Station to Gateshead. Long-distance coaches use Newcastle Coach Station on St James Boulevard.
Newcastle has two bus stations: Haymarket for services heading north and east, and Eldon Square for those going south and west. Both are operated by Nexus. Many city centre roads are bus-only or have bus lanes. Stagecoach is the main operator, with buses stopping at multiple city centre locations.
