GATHER.TOWN ENVIRONMENT
Getting started
- Open https://gather.town/app/AcSdmOSWNL8MvaPk/EC-TEL%202021 in a browser (Use Firefox or Chrome browser on your laptop. Gather experience on mobile devices is limited).
- Insert the password that you will receive by e-mail the day before.
- You will be prompted to add your name (we kindly ask you to write your full name to help other participants recognize you – e.g., to answer questions about your presentation) and to customise your avatar 🧑🏽🎨 – once you are happy with your creation, press Next.
- Your browser will ask you to access your camera and microphone. You’ll need to grant Gather these permissions if you want to interact with the others!
- Once you have granted Gather permission, make sure you select the right camera and audio interface (probably they will be your in-built microphone and webcam). Once you are done, press Join the Gathering
- At this point you will be given the opportunity to take a quick tutorial. These instructions cover the most important aspects, but we suggest that you also take the interactive tutorial, if you have time (otherwise, you can press Skip the tutorial).
Acting in the virtual world
Moving around
Simply use the arrow keys in your keyboard to move around ◀️🔼🔽▶️
Follow the coloured arrows on the floor to participate in the different sessions
Walk through the doors to join in the different sessions of the conference
If you are stuck in a position, you can respawn by clicking on your name in the toolbar and then choosing “Respawn”.
Mute/unmute
On the bottom right corner, hover your cam with the mouse to mute/unmute yourself and to activate/deactivate your cam.
Interact with objects
You can interact with many objects in Gather (e.g., link, posters). You can recognise objects you can interact with as they have a glowing yellow light. To interact with them, press x in your keyboard. Once you are done, press x again to go back to the main page.
Interact with peers
By default, you will be able to hear and see only the participants whose avatar is close to yours. When you walk in the proximity of another participant, you will see their camera image popping up on the top of the screen.
Private spaces
You will notice that Gather will occasionally tell you that you have entered are private space. In these cases, you will be able to hear and see only the other participants staying between the boundaries of this space, and other participants will not be able to hear and see you.
List of active participants
You can see the list of active participants form the column on the left. If you want to find them quickly, simply click on their name and press Locate on map.

Key areas
Spend some time wondering around the space and try to find the main areas:
- Zoom rooms (follow the orange arrow)
- Plenary room (follow the yellow arrow)
- Booths and Poster rooms (follow the green arrow)
- Coffee break area (follow the red arrow)
- Helpdesk
The quick room access (blue arrow) will take you directly to the corresponding location
Sessions
- Enter a Gather room and press x in your keyboard to enter zoom call button.
- Click on the zoom link and open the zoom application in a separate window, Gather will auto-mute the user’s video and audio output.
- The session is hosted on Zoom directly
- To leave the session, exit the zoom call and head back to Gather. Click the green button to enter the Gather space exactly where you last left off.
Calendar
You can click the calendar icon to learn about which events are taking place and in what virtual room.
