Mihwa Lee is a PhD candidate and research scientist at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at University of Tübingen. She holds a master degree in English Linguistics from University of Tübingen and a bachelor degree in Global Communications from Doshisha University. Her research interest lies in the intersection of second language acquisition (SLA), computer-assisted language learning (CALL), and educational psychology. Specifically, she is interested in investigating learners’ learning behavior while interacting with digital learning systems and the relationship between behavioral patterns and psychological antecedents such as motivation.

In her PhD project, she is developing the Annotated Reading Enhancement System (ARES), an Intelligent CALL (ICALL) system that leverages natural language processing technologies and large language models to models to support second language learners with reading comprehension tasks. The goal of the project is threefold: (i) to design and develop a ICALL system for reading in second language (L2) with student stakeholders in the loop; (ii) to evaluate the system’s effectiveness in real-life English classrooms from various aspects including learners’ perceptions of the system, L2 reading performance, and motivation; and (iii) to investigate leaners’ learning behavior from trace data.
