Yuli Sutoto Nugroho is a PhD student at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science. His research centres on educational technology, distance learning, vocational education, eye-tracking, and facial expression recognition. His PhD thesis explores the impact of presence in video-based learning and the metaverse. Alongside his studies, he serves as a lecturer at the State University of Surabaya and is an employee of the Indonesian government.

My PhD project studies how an instructor’s presence in lecture videos impacts learning outcomes, visual attention, cognitive load, and emotional state. The research compares different conditions: no instructor presence, physical instructor presence, and instructor presence as an avatar in video lectures, along with individual versus group learning in a metaverse environment. Data is gathered using eye-tracking technology, facial expression recognition through an established API, tests, and questionnaires.
