Mr. Andre Kenneth “Chase” Randall is a computer science doctoral student researching AI in Education at University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass). Supported by the Spaulding-Smith Fellowship through the UMass Graduate School, he collaborates with Research Professor Beverly P. Woolf and Professor David A. Mix Barrington to blend AI in Education with Automata Theory. He earned his honors bachelor’s in computer science from Georgia State University. He earned his master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering as a GEM Full Master’s Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), supported by Intel Corporation and CMU.
PhD Project: As classroom sizes grow, providing scalable, targeted feedback becomes challenging. In COMPSCI 250, a core course in discrete mathematics, the author introduced a Python tool to help students master regular language expressions. After using the tool, student feedback was collected to refine its design. This paper adds to AI in education by exploring student perspectives on reusable learning objects. Future work will focus on diverse educator recruitment and the balance between technology and human intervention in teaching. Initial findings suggest further research may uncover deeper themes.
