About this institutional member

The Centre for e-Learning Technology is a research and development institute that is run by Saarland University, Saarland University of Applied Sciences and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH). It was founded at the beginning of 2010 and is operated jointly by the universities and the DFKI (German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence). Professor Dr. Jörg Siekmann and Professor Dr. Christoph Igel are the founding directors. By mid 2012 the two competence centres “Virtual Saar University” (VISU) and the DFKI Competence Center e-Learning (CCeL) merged under the umbrella of CeLTech. CeLTech offers more than 20 years of expertise in international, national and regional research, development, application, consulting and services into e-Learning, education technologies, information and knowledge management. Close collaboration between research and industry and applied basic research are its hallmarks. CeLTech operates 18 R&D laboratories in Germany, the USA, Netherlands and China. CeLTech is largely financed by project and contract research and to a limited extent by institutional funding from Saarland University.

Research profile of this institutional member

CeLTech’s structure reflects the added value process from research to development via the implementation of model projects and prototyping to the final product or service. Accordingly, CeLTech integrates clusters of “Research & Development”, “Education & Advanced Studies” and “Consulting & Services”, which are each assigned R&D labs differing in thematic focus and location. The cluster “Research & Development”, for instance, operates seven R&D labs: “Intelligent e-Learning Technology”, “Psychological Assessment Technology”, “Educational Technology for Knowledge Sharing”, “Intelligent Technology for Collaborative Learning”, “Motor Learning Technology”, “Mencius Lab for Educational Technology” and “De Groot Lab for Technology Enhanced Learning in Mathematics”. The cluster “Education & Advanced Studies” houses six R&D labs: “Applied e-Learning Technology”, “e-Learning Skill Lab”, “e-Learning in MSSE/MINT”, “eLearning in Medicine”, “e-Learning in Health & Education” and “Art, Design and Media in Education”. The cluster “Consulting & Services” operates five R&D labs: “Evaluation and Sustainability”, “Translation and Localisation”, “IT-Services for e-Learning”, “Digital Music in Education” and “Content and Learning Management”. CeLTech stands out by integrating the collaboration among clusters and R&D labs with training, university and research institutions as well as closely cooperating with partners from industry, chambers of commerce, associations, ministries and non-profit organisations on projects.
